AUTUMN TERM 1
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to the beginning of a new school year. Your children are now entering Year 2 which is the last stage before they take the leap into Key Stage 2 – Year 3. This is a very exciting stage in their educational journey and I am looking forward to a happy and successful time with them. The topics covered this term are outlined below. If you have any artefacts, photographs or books relating to any of the topics, we would welcome them gladly. We will ensure that they are returned safely to you after our topics are completed.
R.E. Our first topic is Beginnings The children will think about all the beginnings we make every day. This links to children’s own exploration of beginnings and is enriched by learning about God who is there at every beginning.
English This term our topics are Stories with familiar settings (fiction) and Instructions (non-fiction). For our fiction topic, the children will be creating stories based on events which happen in their everyday settings, but with a twist. For our non-fiction topic, the children will follow, assess and create their own instructions. They will learn the importance of correctly ordering instructions to allow others to follow them.
Maths Our topics this half term cover counting, sequencing numbers, ordering and rounding numbers. The children will develop their understanding of addition and subtraction. They will recognise that addition can be done in any order whereas subtraction cannot. They will work with real life situations involving money. Mental calculations are very important and work on this area will be done weekly.
Science Our topic is Health and Growth. This topic helps the children to recognise they types of food that make up their diet and give examples of each. They will learn about the need for adequate exercise and diet to help them grow and stay healthy. They will make comparisons and describe differences between babies, toddlers, children their age and older. We will also look at medicines – what they are used for and how we make sure they are used safely.
I.C.T. The children will be communicating information using text. They will learn to enter text and correct it/alter sentences. They will also use a paint programme to create art work.
History We will look at the life of Florence Nightingale and find out where she went to help the soldiers and what happened as a result of her work.
D & T The children will be looking at healthy eating and creating healthy snacks.
Music Our topic is ‘The long and the short of it’. This topic helps the children to discriminate between longer and shorter sounds, and to use them to create interesting sequences of sound. The children will also be learning a range of songs relating to our topics.
P.E. Year 2 are very fortunate to have the expertise of a P.E. coach this term.
I am looking forward to a very successful and rewarding year in Year 2. You can help your child by listening to them read every evening for a short while. Also, help them learn their weekly spellings.
If you have any questions regarding any of the above or if you wish to discuss your child, please feel free to speak to me before or after school.
I look forward to a busy and exciting term with your children.
Yours sincerely
Mrs Kiernan.
